Mayfly Opens Upcycled Fashion Storefront at The Garage in Harvard Square
Mayfly is now open on the second floor of The Garage in Harvard Square. Mayfly is a
sustainable art and fashion brand that creates handmade and one-of-a-kind upcycled clothing.
Upcycling is the act of turning something discarded into something new again. In this disposable
culture, we are polluting the earth with the overconsumption of all goods, especially clothing. We
are consuming more than we can keep up with and most of our textile waste is shipped overseas
to pollute other countries. Mayfly believes creating something new out of discarded material is
an act of revolution in a world of overconsumption.
Mayfly strives to inspire others to think creatively about what they wear and make sustainable
fashion accessible. Every Mayfly piece is made using exclusively secondhand materials and
garments in order to give the clothing and fabric a new and longer lifespan.
The store also features 11 local upcyclers and artists: Colleen Cecelia’s Textiles, Cotton and Blue
Co., Gracie Drinkwater, Hootie Vintage, Isaboko, Just Add People, Minted Supply, Pagani,
Scrappy Rebel, SMLeo, and Valdah.
Owner, Alex DiMauro is an artist at Western Ave Studios in Lowell, Massachusetts. Alex is a
Lesley University graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She started Mayfly in 2020 with a 1969
VW bus and a mission to create sustainable art and fashion. Mayfly allows Alex to unite her
passions for sustainability, art, creating positive change, and spreading love.
Alex works with her sister, Madeline DiMauro, who serves as her Business Manager. Madeline
is a Belmont University graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Together, they
have successfully opened four pop-up locations and are excited for their new location in Harvard
Square.
Mayfly had previous holiday pop-ups at the Burlington Mall in 2022, 2023, and 2024, along with
a Project Pop-Up location on Market Street in Lowell, MA in spring 2024. For the past 4 years,
Mayfly has vended at markets in the Boston area. Along with their new storefront, Mayfly is
making their return to the SoWa Winter Festival this year.
