Mary Catherine Deibel, Co-owner of Upstairs on the Square, who spearheaded the Harvard Square Bake Sale for Japan effort stated, “We first heard about Samin Nosrat’s efforts to launch a national bake sale to benefit Japan last week when we spotted a link to her blog. Immediately we knew that we wanted to participate. We sent out the word to our friends and colleagues and are so grateful for the outpouring of support. We will be selling all of our delicious treats from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. In addition to the baked goods, we will have a limited amount of tea donated by MEM Tea Importers and we’re hoping to sell some limited edition Japan Relief posters created by local designer, Travis Robertson and made available by Susan Corcoran of Black Ink.”
Members of the Japanese community at Harvard will be on hand distributing bracelets and teaching folks how to fold origami cranes. The cranes will be sent to Samin Nosrat in San Francisco; Samin will then forward them to Japan.
Local Cambridge resident Yumi Izuyama has organized a group of Japanese residents to be at the Bake Sale to teach origami crane making and to present cranes to everyone who purchases baked goods. It is her way of thanking the community for their support.
Norah Dooley from Massmouth, a coalition of enthusiasts, advocates and masters of the art of story, has reached out to storytellers who will join the bakers on Winthrop Street to share Japanese folk tales from 11:00 a.m. until noon.
