Lecture

In this joint panel, we will first explore how creative practices and institutions navigate audience participation and how they enter into spaces of co-production. Artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer will discuss how his practice, use of technology, and processes of community participation are in dialogue with Krzysztof Wodiczko’s own practice. In her presentation, Jill Medvedow, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston, will discuss the role of institutions in fostering community commitment and involvement through various modes of engagement, focusing in particular on Wodiczko’s Bunker Hill Monument Project (1998) and his installation Out of Here: The Veterans Project (2009–10) at the ICA.

Each panelist will be in conversation with Wodiczko following their presentation.

These talks are organized to coincide with the exhibition Krzysztof Wodiczko: Portrait (October 14, 2021–April 17, 2022), the artist’s new commission at the Harvard Art Museums that explores the state of democracy today. Video recordings capturing voices and opinions of students and young people from Harvard and the Boston area are used to activate the Harvard Art Museums’ iconic portrait of George Washington (c. 1795) by Gilbert Stuart, fostering an exchange of views and responses at this time of heightened political division. A concurrent exhibition, Interrogative Design: Selected Works of Krzysztof Wodiczko, is on view at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design through February 20, 2022.

Speakers:
Mary Schneider Enriquez, Houghton Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Harvard Art Museums
Krzysztof Wodiczko, Professor in Residence of Art, Design and the Public Domain, Harvard University Graduate School of Design
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, artist
Jill Medvedow, Ellen Matilda Poss Director, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston
