Leonor (writer/director Amalia Ulman) is forced to return home after the death of her father and reluctantly reconnects with her eccentric mother (played by Ulman’s own mother). Mother and daughter quickly form a low-level con artist team, hustling to maintain the semblances of their middle-class lifestyle in the face of an impending eviction. Over the course of a week, we watch as Leonor’s hopes are tested as she attempts to use her sexuality as a means of escape. Meanwhile her mother grifts her way towards another kind of security — the care of a jail cell.
EL PLANETA is a dark comedy that explores contemporary poverty, female desire, and the always complicated relationships between mother and daughter. Reminiscent of early Jim Jarmusch with its loose, wryly comedic style and black and white cinematography, this bracing first feature just garnered two nominations from the annual Gotham Awards: Best Screenplay and Breakthrough Performance!
Please Note: All in-person screenings at the Brattle now require proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test.
