Councillor Patty Nolan, will chair a Health and Environment Committee meeting of the Cambridge City Council to discuss energy capacity planning in Cambridge. This meeting will occur at City Hall in Cambridge on Wednesday, October 29, from 3:00pm – 5:00pm and will also be accessible via zoom. The call of the meeting: “The Health and Environment Committee will hold a public hearing to review and discuss energy planning in Cambridge including expanding electricity capacity, expanding renewable energy productions, BEUDO energy requirements, and thermal energy network planning and any other topics relevant to the city’s overall planning for ensuring city goals of electrification may be met.” (meeting materials – when available)
Eversource will be present, and we hope all of you will attend. All of you either own properties or represent owners of large energy capacity properties or portfolios. We would like you to join City staff from the Sustainability Department, the Department of Public Works, and Inspectional Services, along with representatives from Eversource to discuss ongoing work to expand electrical capacity within the city, including renewable energy production, and efforts to streamline electrification efforts for residents and businesses. City staff and Eversource will discuss with Council ongoing collaboration and medium- and long-term strategies for growing and improving service of renewable energy. This discussion will focus both on large scale capacity planning for substations and also local scale capacity for transformer upgrades.
This meeting is not only for institutional leaders and large energy users who will be dealing primarily with large scale energy capacity. This meeting is also for smaller property owners as well as business owners who deal with the energy grid at the individual building and transformer level. This meeting will focus also on issues with smaller scale electrical upgrades, working with Eversource, and making building efficiency upgrades.
While this meeting is not specifically tailored to Building Energy Use and Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO) and the rollout of regulations, some discussion of BEUDO requirements and strategies to meet upcoming requirements will likely take place.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Patrick Hayes, phayes@cambridgema.gov aid to Councillor Nolan.
