The COOP Unveils Winner of First-Ever Holiday Storefront Design Competition
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., December 18, 2024 — The COOP, a cornerstone of the Harvard and MIT communities since 1882, is unveiling the winner of its inaugural Holiday Storefront Design Competition: Mariia Solovii (Harvard College ‘27). Debuting the week of December 16, Solovii’s visionary concept transforms The COOP’s iconic storefront on Massachusetts Avenue into a festive masterpiece.
“Having a student design The COOP’s preeminent storefront for the first time in the organization’s nearly 150 year history is just one of the many ways we’re reimagining The COOP for the future,” said Jodi Goldstein, the newly-appointed CEO of The COOP. “This is the beginning of an exciting journey to transform The COOP from a group of retail stores into a vibrant platform that supports, resources, and uplifts our members while creating a more interesting and experiential retail experience for our customers. Over the next year, we will begin rolling out initiatives that will inspire connection, showcase innovation, and redefine how we serve our members and the academic communities of Harvard and MIT.”
The Competition challenged participants to reimagine The COOP storefront with bold, modern designs. Students across Harvard and MIT from multiple disciplines — including medicine, design, urban studies, and mechanical engineering — submitted proposals that included renderings, floor plans showcasing layout and use of space, and narratives connecting their concept to The COOP’s mission. Entrants were evenly distributed between Harvard and MIT.
“Solovii’s winning design pays homage to The COOP’s unique location overlooking historic Harvard Yard,” said Adrian Gill, CMO at The COOP. “Her concept features miniature replicas of Harvard’s iconic buildings with a playful twist. Mannequins with animal faces dressed in COOP merchandise represent Harvard’s beloved fauna and bring unexpected whimsy to the winter scene. It’s a reflection of The COOP’s evolving brand, honoring tradition while embracing creativity and delight.”
Solovii was awarded the $2,000 grand prize, along with up to $1,000 for design implementation. The runner up received a $1000 prize, Seven finalists each received a $200 cash prize and recognition on The COOP’s social media platforms. Solovii’s storefront will be on display through January. High resolution photos and video of the display are available for download.
