Join the Women’s Parade and Conclave – Let your voice be heard!

Dear Friends,

As you may be aware, the Harvard Square Business Association in partnership with the office of Cambridge City Councillor E. Denise Simmons, is currently planning an important and timely event, “Celebrating Women’s Suffrage Parade & Conclave on the Common”. This convening of women from all walks of life and their allies happens on Saturday, August 20th, beginning with a march from Cambridge City Hall to the Cambridge Common at 1pm, followed by a ‘conclave’ of speeches, music and a gathering of the community.

Councillor Simmons and I personally encourage your attendance at this significant event that commemorates the 102nd Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote and raise our voices on historic and present day causes that affect us all… reproductive rights, health, climate, housing, homelessness, transportation, arts/culture, education and food insecurity, to name a few.

We had originally planned to celebrate this milestone in 2020 for the 100th Anniversary, but curtailed plans due to the pandemic. It is even more fitting that we gather together now given the current political climate and the recent Supreme Court ruling.

Please join your neighbors, friends and allies as we make our voices heard regarding women’s rights and celebrate those who bravely paved the way.

Conclave speakers include the following, with more to be announced soon:

  • Cheryl Townsend Gilkes, Assistant Pastor of Special Projects, Union Baptist Church, Cambridge
  • U. Renee Hall, Harvard University Fellow, CEO of TUU Enterprises and Chief of Police (retired) Dallas Police Department
  • E. Denise Simmons, City Councillor

Please HELP US GET THE WORD OUT! Gather family, friends, neighbors, neighborhood groups, members of your organizations…make banners, wear white with purple and yellow sashes (the colors of the Suffrage movement) and join us! Let us know how many allies will be in your contingent marching in the parade.

Kindly e-mail me at djillson@harvardsquare.com, Councillor Simmons aide, Neal Alpert at nalpert@cambridgema.gov or Bill Manley at wmanley@harvardsquare.com with your numbers and any questions.
