Leaf, creators of the world’s first tablet that is purpose-built for commerce, today announced a partnership with the Harvard Square Business Association (HSBA) to support charities that aid the homeless in Harvard Square.  Through an initiative that will be introduced this morning at HSBA’s 103rd annual meeting, people will be able to help provide food, clothing, shelter and other services for the homeless in Harvard Square by making credit card donations at local businesses.

Popular Harvard Square restaurant Tory Row announced today that their second annual road race, set for Sunday, June 3rd, has doubled in size this year. The race, which runs along historic Brattle Street and into the Huron Village neighborhood of Cambridge, has already filled its 600 runner capacity by encouraging teams from local businesses and nonprofits to join the field.

Chocolate lovers rejoice!  The Harvard Square Business Association and Harvard Square Chocolate Tours are pleased to announce the 2^nd Annual Chocolate Festival! This three day event includes Dining in the Dark at UpStairs on the Square and Nubar, where diners will be blindfolded and have their senses heightened as they indulge on chocolate meals.  Fire + Ice will host Death by Chocolate, a Murder Mystery, where diners will experience delectable chocolate treats and an interactive theatre experience.  For those who would like to learn more about the intricacies of chocolate and the chocolate making process, “The Art of Chocolate Tasting” will be hosted by Russell House Tavern and Finale will host “An Evening of Wine and Chocolate”.  On Saturday from 1pm – 2pm, Deguglielmo Plaza (in front of Crema Cafe at 27 Brattle Street) will be the location of a free chocolate sampling event featuring delicious chocolate treats from Harvard Square’s finest purveyors along with prizes and entertainment!

A Harvard Square institution for 78 years, the stationery, office and art supply store was founded by  Mallory and Justin Slate's father, Bob. The new owner, Laura E. Donohue has worked closely with the Slate family to bring a forward-thinking vision to the store while retaining the customer focus and knowledgeable service that has been the hallmark of the Slate franchise. The new location, 30 Brattle Street, is the previous location of a Bob Slate store in the 1980's.

The parade departs Davis Square at noon and arrives in Harvard Square for Oktoberfest at 1:00pm. Please come early, grab a spot on Mass Avenue and enjoy a parade that is truly like no other. Over 30 bands from all over the United States and local community groups participate in the parade. The HONKers are an eclectic group of colorful, energizing, and outrageous talented musicians that are sure to delight all with their funky music and a strut in their step!

Kyle Lafferty and Phil Oertle will be representing the United States at this year's World Rowing Championships, August 28 – September 4, in Bled, Slovenia. They were named the US Lightweight Men's Pair after winning the USRowing Senior World Championship Trials on August 4th, and are now training on the Charles River until August 19th under coach Fred Schoch.

Last year, the Harvard Square Business Association partnered with HSBA member and friend, Kathy Irving, Vice President of Hammond Real Estate in her efforts to “Help Haiti Walk.”   Her efforts helped collect over 10,000 lbs. of crutches, canes, walkers, tarps, tents, and clothing for the people of Haiti. She extends her thanks to all who participated in last years Help Haiti Walk collection and is asking for your help again this year.

On February 5th, while the Packers and Steelers were gearing up to see who would dominate Super Bowl XLV, eight Harvard Square restaurants were gearing up to see who would dominate the chili scene.

The game, which is sold out, will feature a Harvard team that stands 21-5 overall and 10-2 in the Ancient Eight, while Princeton enters the week 22-5 and 10-1 in Ivy League contests. Two Harvard victories this week against Penn and Princeton would clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title for the Crimson, which would be the first in program history. The winner of the Ivy League earns an automatic playoff bid to the NCAA tournament. Harvard men’s basketball has not made a tournament appearance since 1946.

H1N1: The Cambridge Story - A poster gallery on display at Cambridge City Hall (795 Massachusetts Avenue), from April 5 to April 23. The exhibit showcases the partners, planning, and strategies used to vaccinate thousands of Cambridge residents against both H1N1 and seasonal flu during an extraordinary year. On Saturday, April 2^nd from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Harvard Square bakers from UpStairs on the Square, Finale, Sweet Cupcake, Harvest, Henrietta’s Table, and Rialto will gather outside UpStairs at 91 Winthrop Street in Harvard Square to sell their cookies, pies, cakes and cupcakes. All proceeds will go directly to Peace Winds Japan, an NGO doing relief work on the ground in Japan. There are over 40 Bake Sale for Japan events happening around the country, as part of a national endeavor to raise $100,000.

Beginning on the 29th of November and running through the December shopping season, the record-breaking wallet will be on display to the public in Harvard Square.  Donations can literally be placed in the wallet to aid local and national non-profits. Organizations such as Pediatric Aids Treatment Support (PATS) and the Jose Mateo Ballet Company will be on hand throughout the day to greet visitors and provide more information about their groups to those looking to learn more. 100% of all donations go to the organization present at the wallet each day. Over the past 46 years, the Head of the Charles regatta has grown tremendously. Today, more than 8,000 athletes from around the world compete in 55 different race events. The Regatta grew to a two-day event in 1997 and now attracts up to 300,000 spectators during the October weekend. Learning from last year’s efforts, the TOC committee worked tirelessly to make this year’s Taste an environmentalist’s dream: a large public event generating virtually zero waste.  Juliana Lyman of Savenor’s, took charge of the “Green Sub-Committee” and convinced several local businesses to contribute to this goal.

Mount Auburn Cemetery cordially invites you to participate in our seasonal candle lighting service at Story Chapel. We hold this program to remember the lives of the many who have gone before us and to experience the uniqueness of Mount Auburn as a memorial of beauty and peace. Candles will be available at cost for those who want to light a candle in honor of someone they wish to remember. Dressed up & delicious with delirious dancing, it's a Cambridge tradition to celebrate the ushering in of the New Year at UpStairs on the Square.
We plan to ring in 2010 in style, with early and late seatings on each of our two levels of dining. The fabulous band Catharine and the Greats provide the music from 10 pm on. Every year it’s was dancing in the aisles-and all agreed it was our best New Years Eve ever. We were all as one--old and young--as we sang and danced our collective heart out to the wild strains of rock and roll and blues classics.

Seventy five years ago Robert Slate began selling paper and pencils at 8 Holyoke St. in Harvard Square as Bob Slate, Stationer. He persevered, survived the depression, nurtured his shop through the forties, thrived in the fifties, and unknown to himself created a legacy by orchestrating a seamless transition of responsibility to his sons Justin starting in 1963 and Mallory in 1973.

The Lumiere brothers are credited with the first public film screening. Their films ran an averaged 46 seconds: our festival's tiny masterworks come in at 60 seconds apiece. They only had ten films to show that day in 1895: we have over 100! Not to oversell it, but if the Lumiere's could see Le:60 Film Fest - their twin moustaches would explode into flames simultaneously.

BOSTON (March 28, 2008)—The Independent Film Festival of Boston (IFFBoston) today announced the films that will be featured at the Brattle Theatre as part of the 2008 Independent Film Festival of Boston. The sixth annual festival will be held at the historic Brattle Theatre April 25-April 27, 2008. This year, to meet the demands of its growing audience, IFFBoston has expanded its slate to include 96 films. The festival, complete with over 150 film screenings, filmmaker Q&A sessions, panel discussions, visiting filmmakers, parties and events will showcase the works of filmmakers who seek to create films that are life changing, thought provoking and expose aspects of life in new and revealing manners.

The familiar, grandfatherly voice of Timothy Sawyer that guides you through the Hall of Presidents at the Smithsonian Museum also wants to tell you historical tales of Cambridge.

At the urging of his wife, Joan Sawyer, an award-winning writer and producer who loves history, Timothy was persuaded to be part of "Tales of Olde Cambridge, A Historic Guided Walking Tour of Harvard Square."

Since 2002, the 15-member Harvard Square Design Committee has worked to develop a master plan of improvements for Harvard Square. The Committee represents a broad range of interests, including business and property owners, residents, and Harvard University. They have worked with staff from the City of Cambridge, consultants, and the local community, to help develop a plan that preserves and enhances that features that make Harvard Square so vibrant and unique, and at the same time addresses complicated problems such as traffic management, pedestrian and bicycle safety, ADA compliance, historic preservation, and overall aesthetics.
