Human Evolution 150 Years After Darwin” a lecture by Daniel Lieberman taking place on Thursday, March 5, 6:00 pm. But, paradoxically, humans have created a world that is leading to a kind of “dysevolution.” Harvard Professor of Biological Anthropology Daniel Lieberman explains how many of the adaptations that enabled us to succeed as active hunter-gatherers, including the ability to store fat for lean time, can now impair our wellbeing and may even threaten our species' very survival. Free and open to the public in the Geological Lecture Hall.

“For Singles Only: St. Singles Day Party”—A Valentine’s Eve Late Night Party in the Monday Club Bar
On
Friday, February 13th from 9:30PM– 1:00AM for only $13.00 (or $14,000 .00 for couples) we’re holding our third annual sit-in/stand-up cocktail party in the Monday Club Bar to mark our own specially created “holiday” known as Saint Singles Day—a day that celebrates the freedoms of singularity and the ability to find mono-happiness without the tacky cards, flowers and chocolates. We’ll have our libation liberation drinks priced in the “single” digits. Last year was a grand event, with singles of every age and persuasion dancing and noshing and celebrating singleness all together. This event sold out in a flash last year, so let us know you’re coming!

The Brattle Theatre is having a
special showing of Casablanca on
February 13th (at 7:30PM) and February 14th (at 4:30PM, 7:00PM, 9:30PM). General admission tickets are $9.50 each, or buy our special premium tickets for $50/couple, which include 2 reserved seats, Turner Classic Movies’ Leading Couples book and a special gift from the Brattle!
Synopsis: (1942) dir Michael Curtiz w/ Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Conrad Veidt [102 min] Who knows if we’ll always have Paris, but hopefully we’ll always have this marvelous motion picture to watch. CASABLANCA has a reputation of being swooningly romantic, and it certainly is, but it’s also wryly funny, somewhat cynical, and remarkably thrilling. It’s the French Morocco during WWII and ex-pat bar owner Rick Blaine (Bogart) finds himself once again tangled in the web of his lost love, Ilsa (Bergman), when she arrives in Casablanca with her current beau, a French freedom fighter looking to get passage to America and escape the Nazis. Often imitated but never matched, CASABLANCA has a special recipe for success that includes a top-notch script, fantastic supporting players (including Claude Rains, Sidney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre), and iconic star turns by two Hollywood legends. Not to be missed-particularly on this most romantic of weekends!

The tour of Harvard Square left little doubt in Jody Pinto's mind that this neighborhood was full of well-loved buildings and important historical sites.
"Everywhere we went, someone would say, 'Oh, I just love this building, I love the brickwork,' or 'the detail above the door.' Or they would say, 'My neighborhood group fought against a developer to save this building, and we won!'"
