Think PINK, Drink PINK, Shop PINK:

A Breast Cancer Community Awareness Campaign throughout Harvard Square

    July 5th - August 31st

June 29th Harvard Square/Cambridge…Members of the Harvard Square Business Association have joined together to create a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign using PINK themed window displays, PINK DRINKS and PINK SHOPPING opportunities in Harvard Square from July 5th through August 31st. The event changes weekly with new displays, offers and events. The financial donations raised by individual businesses and special events will be tallied and announced after August 31st.

Our event took shape in 2006 when Kari Kueltzer, owner of Grendel’s Den was approached by a former bartender, Pam Giller, about a fundraiser to help sponsor her entry into the The Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk from Framingham to Boston. Pam’s team “Breast Man Walking” includes Pam’s dad, a male Breast Cancer Survivor. Kari and Pam thought PINK DRINKS were a hot ticket for breast cancer fundraising and brought the idea to the Harvard Square Business Association and the idea caught on immediately…From Felipe’s Taqueria’s non-alcoholic homemade “Watermelon Agua Fresca” to the hot pink “Femme Fatale” at Noir, PINK DRINKS WERE THE RAGE in Harvard Square last summer and their enjoyment raised awareness and money for a cause that is close to all of our hearts.

THIS YEAR, we embark on a new way of sharing our thoughts and our experiences on the subject of Breast Cancer Awareness in our community and to our visitors. In addition serving pink drinks and selling pink items, and hosting annual pink parties…this year we are rolling out a THINK PINK BOOK including recipes, hints, portraits, and ideas about Pink! Our fabulous new PINK book will contain photographs shot by world renowned photographer Ellen McDermott. We are fortunate to have Ellen contribute her time to this charitable enterprise and labor of love! Books will be available for sale at participating shops and restaurants in Harvard Square and will be available for sale at www.harvardsquare.com the majority of the proceeds of the book will go to the Alice Hoffman Breast Health Center at Mount Auburn Hospital.

The HSBA has been inspired by the enthusiasm of our members, as well as the incredible reception from the public as well as the remarkable amount OF INK ON PINK we received in the press…our participating businesses have decided where they would like the money raised to be donated and the donations will be tallied at the end of the event and sent along to Pam Giller’s 3-day walking team, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Hoffman Breast Center at Mount Auburn Hospital.
