    Checks Presented to the Beneficiaries of the 2011 Taste of Cambridge

    On Wednesday, September 21, 2011, members of the Cambridge License Advisory Board and the Harvard Square Business Association convened at Christopher’s Restaurant to present checks to the beneficiaries of the 2011 Taste of Cambridge event. The Salvation Army and Cambridge Program/Special Olympics were each given a check for $10,000.
    On June 23, 2011 several thousand people descended on the upper and lower levels of the Charles Hotel to sample culinary delights from over 55 Cambridge restaurants. “In addition to its world class shops and cultural activities, Cambridge has long been regarded as a center of culinary excellence. We are excited to invite everyone to this annual event where all proceeds are donated to two worthy charities,” said Denise Jillson, co-chair of the event and Executive Director of the Harvard Square Business Association. 
    The Salvation Army Cambridge/Somerville Corps “Restoring Lives Capital Campaign:
    The Cambridge-Somerville Salvation Army offers a safe haven for men, women, and families who are trying to put the pieces of their lives back together. They have launched the Restoring Lives Capital Campaign, designed to provide emergency shelter for men who are willing to remain sober. Last year, 16,445 nights of lodging, and 49,414 meals were provided to 1,116 homeless men. Clients can also receive assistance with employment, finances, legal issues and housing. In addition, The Salvation Army provides transitional programs for people deciding to make significant life changes, such as classes on drug and alcohol addiction, relapse prevention, life skills and spiritual formation.

    Cambridge Program/Special Olympics: Saturday Program

    Cambridge Program/Special Olympics: Saturday Program is designed to enhance the lives of its participants by providing quality programs that are geared to promote self-esteem, encourage social interaction, and increase physical well-being. Its goal is to help create for individuals with a range of needs an empathetic community through programs and activities that promote health and fitness, care, respect, and understanding differences. The Saturday Program offers a variety of activities, including field trips, swimming, fitness, arts and crafts, cooking, weightlifting, hygiene, ADL skills, and sports such as tennis, basketball, track and field, and volleyball.
