Chalk One Up with Sidewalk Sam and Eric Sommer

Beginning at 11am on Monday, June 20, 2011, the sidewalks in Deguglielmo Plaza (Brattle Street) in Harvard Square will be transformed into works of art with fabulous chalk drawings.  “Chalk One Up”, in conjunction with Sidewalk Sam and The Boston Society of Architects, welcomes architects, designers, and people in all the building trades to come out to the sidewalk and show their visionary designs and ideas in chalk.  Sidewalk Sam invites you to bring your imagination and show off your creativity and let thousands of pedestrians applaud your work!

Artist Sidewalk Sam is the creative force behind ArtStreet, Inc. which was formed in 1991.  ArtStreet brings the arts out of the “culture houses” and into the streets – engaging throngs of people in cultural events.  Beginning with the first public creations of “Sidewalk Sam” drawing copies of masterpiece artworks on sidewalks in the midst of pedestrian traffic and delighting passers-by with his friendly, inclusive, creative spirit – ArtStreet has developed a national reputation for using the arts to rally people around noble causes.

At 4pm, the arts continue with the musical stylings of singer/songwriter Eric Sommer.  In the 80s, Eric broke out of the Boston and Cambridge folk music scene with a mixture of roots –pure, finger style acoustic guitar and new wave pop, a blurred combination of Nick Lowe, The Cars, Spider John Koerner and Jeff Beck influences.  Since 1995, Eric has been touring and playing all over the US and plays an average of 200 – 270 shows a tear.  He has found a home in Knoxville, NT, Chicago, IL, Wilmington, NC, and Nashville, TN, to name a few.  He is a regular at the Bayfront Blues Festival in Duluth, MN, The Carrboro Festival in NC and the Festival for the ENO in Raleigh, NC.  The Harvard Square Business Association is thrilled to have Eric back in Harvard Square sharing his melodic artistry with the community.
