In what has become a Harvard Square tradition, the Green Streets Initiative and the Harvard Square Business Association are collaborating on the third annual Walk/Ride Day Free Hot Breakfast. Local restaurants and organizations will be in attendance with delectable, often green, breakfast offerings. The breakfast will take place on Friday, January 28th from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. at Holyoke Center, 1350 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, MA.

According to Janie Katz-Christy, Executive Director and Founder of the Green Streets Initiative, “the event is wonderful way to thank the people who “go green” and make our community more livable.” Walk Ride Days, which started in Cambridge in 2006, have been spreading throughout the Boston area, to other cities in the US, and abroad. A kind of monthly “earth day” for sustainable transportation, they take place year-round, on the last Friday of the month, and involve schools, companies and other organizations, governments and retailers. Green breakfast eaters will include, Cambridge Mayor David P. Maher, Cambridge School Superintendent Jeff Young, CPSD Sustainability Coordinator Kristen Von Hoffman, Police Commissioner Robert Haas, several Cambridge School Committee members and City Councillors, as well as BostonBikes Director Nicole Freedman.

John Schall of Fire + Ice will once again be cooking up his now signature, vibrant, Dr. Seuss inspired Green Eggs and Ham. Kids and adults alike will delight in this colorful dish which can often be seen from a block away! www.fire-ice.com

Boloco will be serving up their Breakfast Burritos. If the past is any indication, these tinfoil wrapped burritos will fly off the serving pan almost as fast as the volunteers from Boloco can keep them coming! A certified green restaurant, Boloco is committed to the environment with innovations such as corn cups, bamboo bowls, naturally-raised meats, organic tofu and energy saving LED lighting. www.boloco.com

Chef Davis and Henrietta's Table will be delivering a platter of “green” pistachio scones that are both tasty and filling! As the Executive Chef for the Charles Hotel, Davis enthusiastically supports local farmers and local fisherman, buying only products that he hand-chooses with the assistance of local purveyors and refusing to use genetically-engineered food. Henrietta’s Table and the Charles Hotel have both been widely recognized for their recycling efforts over the past few years.  www.henriettastable.com

Coffee for the event is graciously donated by JP Licks! JP Licks utilizes various recycling programs for their containers, including their homemade ice cream.  In an effort to lower waste, they promote a discount when any travel mug is brought in for coffee. JP Licks began roasting coffee at the Firehouse in Jamaica Plain in 1999 and has been churning it out ever since. They roast down the middle; dark enough for a hearty brew but not so dark that every bean tastes burnt.  www.jplicks.com

The Eliot Street Café/Dunkin Donuts will be donating special green donuts for the event!
