Inspired by the exchange of ideas and traditions along the historical Silk Road, cellist Yo-Yo Ma established Silkroad in 1998 to explore how the arts can advance global understanding.
Silkroad works to connect the world through the arts, presenting musical performances and learning programs, and fostering radical cultural collaboration around the world.
Since 2000, the musicians of the Grammy Award-winning Silk Road Ensemble have been central to Silkroad’s mission. Under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma and representing a global array of cultures, the Ensemble models new forms of cultural exchange through performances, workshops, and residencies. The artists of the Ensemble draw on the rich tapestry of traditions from around the world that make up our many-layered contemporary identities, weaving together the foreign and familiar to create a new musical language.
If you want to change the world, you have to make a little noise. Join us.

VISION AND MISSION
SILKROAD CREATES A MORE HOPEFUL WORLD THROUGH MUSIC, RADICAL CULTURAL COLLABORATION, AND PASSION-DRIVEN LEARNING.

SILKROAD AT HARVARD
Silkroad has been affiliated with Harvard University since 2005, with offices on Harvard’s Allston campus since 2010. At the University, Silkroad encourages dialogue among artists and musicians, educators and entrepreneurs. Through mentorships and workshops, Silkroad acts as a working laboratory at the intersection of the arts and academics, collaborating across disciplines with Harvard faculty and students.
Partnerships are ongoing with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Office for the Arts, Graduate School of Education, Harvard Business School, the Harvard Innovation Lab, among others. Each summer, Silkroad and Harvard Graduate School of Education co-present an institute for artists and educators from around the world on The Arts and Passion-Driven Learning.
