Social Art Installation takes Harvard Square Getmii asks Cambridge: “What do you need?”
Cambridge, Massachusetts - What do chalkboards in Cambridge and the new Getmii app have in common? They both serve as community boards to broadcast what you need to the people around you. The founders of Getmii have a theory. They believe that the 1,000 people nearest you can help you with anything you need (i.e. homework help, piano teacher, advice, etc.). However, currently there is no way to reach these people if you don’t know them or aren’t friends with them on Facebook. They wanted to create an app that connects the community. Thus, they built Getmii. When you first download Getmii, you’re directed to the Need Feed. Here you can see what everyone is posting around you and if they’re willing to pay for the service. On the Need Feed you can reply to peoples’ needs, helping them and making some money along the way! From the Feed you can also post your own need and make private groups with your friends. The chalkboards will embody the Need Feed and serve as a temporary art installation. On April 22nd, Getmii will see what Cambridge wants by writing, “What do you need?” on the chalkboards and inviting passerby to answer the question by writing on the boards. These chalkboards already appeared in San Francisco’s Union Square and New York’s Grand Central Terminal. Now it’s time for them to make an appearance in Cambridge! Getmii is available for free download on the Apple App store and Google Play.
