Highlights of the Bookish Ball include:

3:00 until 7:00 p.m. - A “Passport to Wisdom” Book Stroll – Wander through the bookstores and printed word shops of Harvard Square and gain “Stamps of Wisdom” on your Bookish Ball Passport!  Wisdom Stamps will allow you to be entered to WIN TWO FREE JET BLUE TICKETS to be drawn at 8:00 pm!  Enjoy special in-store events, activities, refreshments, entertainment and shopping discounts at participating stores.

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. - A Grand Public Bookish Ball!  Holyoke Center (Forbes Plaza1350 Massachusetts Avenue). Join us for a party to honor and celebrate the truly remarkable anniversaries of our long-standing bookstores: the 125th anniversary of the Harvard Coop, the 75th Anniversary the Harvard Book Store, the 60th anniversary Harvard University Press Display Room, the 30th Anniversary of Newbury Comics, the 25th Anniversary of The Globe Corner Bookstore and the 15th Anniversary of James and Devon Gray Booksellers!

Dance to the sweet sounds of THE SWEET DIVINES, a 12 piece soul revival band! EAT CAKE with literary themes designed by Harvard Square Restaurants; Upstairs on the Square, Sandrine’s Bistro, Henrietta’s Table, Grafton Street, The Temple Bar and Z-Square!  Hear Surprise Guest Authors and Local Dignitaries talk about the importance of books and bookstores and community! Come dressed in your best “Great Literary Figure Costume” and win prizes (grand prize is $250 in Harvard Square Bookstore and Restaurant Gift Certificates and a special prize for children: $50 gift certificate from Curious George Books and Toys). 

All events are free and families are encouraged to attend. The Bookish Ball “Passport to Wisdom” featuring a map of all participating Harvard Square bookstores, newsstands, and comic book stores, and restaurants and shops with special offers will be available at the Harvard Square Business Association Kiosk in front of Holyoke Center from 1:00 p.m. throughout the event. The passport will provide information about timed in-store author readings and performances happening in the bookstores and throughout the square.

Book Stroll participants are encouraged to browse all of the bookstores and get their passbooks stamped. Stamped passports must be returned to the Kiosk by 8:00 pm to be entered to win TWO FREE ROUNDTRIP JET BLUE TICKETS and a “Fabulous Shopping and Dining Spree” in Harvard Square.

We hope that you will join us in this celebration of Harvard Square as a place of books and bookstores, of public learning and public discourse, of important anniversaries and as a community that treasures the printed word.

Over it's 76 year history, Harvard Book Store has opened several bookstores in the greater Boston area, including the famous Harvard Book Store Cafe (1980-1994), located on Newbury Street. In Harvard Square, Harvard Book Store originally opened in 1932 at 19 Boylston Street (what is now JFK St.). The Harvard Book Store Law Annex once stood at 12 Plympton Street, from approximately 1965 - 1991.

Harvard Book Store, Harvard Square's literary landmark, is a privately-owned, independent bookstore serving the university and neighborhood community since 1932.

  • GRAPHIC NOVEL ART EXHIBITION: Harvard Book Store, in conjunction with Metropolitan Books/Henry Holt and Company, is proud to present high-quality prints from Howard Zinn’s A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF AMERICAN EMPIRE, edited by Paul Buhle and illustrated by Mike Konopacki. Excerpted from a section entitled “Just Following Orders” (pages 129–34), these six prints showcase Konopacki’s striking cartoon rendition of a crucial part of Zinn’s autobiography. The illustrations also incorporate archival photographs and documents, which make this living experience of history even more vivid.

Bilmes' new book, THE TRILLION DOLLAR WAR, argues that the true cost of the Iraq conflict will make current estimates seem like yard sale bargains. Book discussion and signing at 6:00 p.m.
  • To celebrate 125 years of community involvement, The Harvard Coop will donate a percentage of all book sales on Saturday, April 12th to the PBHA's Summer Urban Program!  PBHA is a student-run nonprofit based on the campus of Harvard University. The PBHA Summer Urban Program enrolls more than 900 campers from low-income families and offers a meaningful teaching experience to 90 teenage junior counselors from across Boston and Cambridge. Learn more about this program, and find out how you can help from the student volunteers who will be at The Coop all afternoon!

First Parish in Cambridge has placed a GOTBOOKS container on Massachusetts Ave. (at the Corner of Church Street). Got Books collects and reuses books that otherwise might be thrown out or recycled as paper. They will also take videotapes and cd's but not magazines or telephone books. These items go to their weekly Charity Book Sale held on Friday and Saturday and are sold for $1.00 per book.
