The Boston Breakers return to action in 2009 with 11 home games at Harvard Stadium from April through August as one of eight teams in the inaugural season of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). U.S. National Team standouts Kristine Lilly and Angela Hucles, who played in Boston from 2001-03, will once again wear the Breakers' Blue. They will be joined by fellow National Team star, Heather Mitts, who along with Hucles, captured the Gold Medal at the 2008 Olympics! Since the initial U.S. National Team allocation in September, the Breakers have received the WPS playing rights to six international superstars, including English striker Kelly Smith and Brazilians Fabiana and Maycon. The Breakers also added Amy LePeilbet, Nancy Augustyniak-Goffi, Sue Weber, and Kristen Luckenbill to the squad. The Breakers will finalize their roster following the 2009 WPS Draft on January 16, 2009, and subsequent tryouts in early February. In addition to the Breakers, the WPS includes teams from Bay Area, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, St. Louis, and Washington D.C. The league expects to expand to Atlanta and Philadelphia in 2010, and intends to create a team in Dallas for the league's second season once a facility is secured.
