What.

The Charles River Conservancy's mission is to make the Charles River Parklands more active, attractive, and accessible for all. The Conservancy works closely with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to enhance and renew the 400 acres of urban parklands from Boston Harbor to the Watertown Dam and to develop projects and programs that enhance outdoor wellness, including the Sunday Parkland Games.

Why.

The Sunday Parkland Games has been an initiative of the Charles River Conservancy to bring families to the parklands and offer fun and athletic activities- free of charge -on Sunday afternoons since 2009.  The program is a component of our "Active Parklands Initiative" that encourages physical activity, especially for children and families. We are focused on these programs to compensate for the lack of physical activities easily accessible and affordable to urban residents.

The Sunday Parkland Games gives both children and adults the opportunity to experience the beauty of the parklands, while enjoying a rich array of fun and healthy activities including badminton, bocce, croquet, Frisbee®, horseshoes, hula hoops, lawn toss, and paddleball, along with team activities such as potato sack races and tug-o-war.  This year we also hope to install a Ga-ga pit and tight rope for those who are looking to try something new. The program allows people of all ages to utilize the available natural, open spaces found in urban areas.  To produce the Sunday Parkland Games the CRC contracts with local games company Knucklebones to provide equipment and coordination.

When.

This summer we plan to run the games for sixteen weeks from June 17rd through September 30th.  All activities will be offered on Sunday afternoons from 2-5 when the adjacent Memorial Drive is closed to cars, thus creating a safer and more accessible playing space. We also offer free yoga classes under the shade of the sycamores from 4-5 pm that are open to the public.  All ages are welcome to come play or just hang out along the Charles - no registration is required!
