Harvey Halpern says about his photographs:
The natural world around us, especially the realm of true Wilderness, has the beauty and power to astound and move all of us. In an increasingly mechanized and alienating artificial environment in which we spend so much of our time, any glimpse of the natural world acts as a soothing breath of fresh air. My aim as a photographer is to impart to the viewer a sense that there is a world of true Wilderness that is out there waiting to be experienced.
Unfortunately the natural world is under siege. It’s no longer responsible to escape from the pressures of our urban existence for a period of renewal, and then turn our backs on a landscape that is threatened. The canyons of Southern Utah are the most unique and beautiful landscape on the face of the planet, but that beauty has not made them immune from a myriad lands host of threats. Dams, unnecessary roads, oil and gas drilling, over grazing and rampant Off Road Vehicle abuse are just some of the threats that these public lands face. That is why I give a portion of each photographic sale to the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA), the most effective voice these fragile lands have.
I have been hiking and photographing this spectacular landscape since 1974. By focusing so long and hard on one region I’ve been able to get into some truly remote areas. Some of my photographs are of areas that no one on foot has seen for over 700 years. Being in a truly wild landscape is at the core of what I’m trying to impart to my audience. At the same time I delight in challenging the viewers perspective on size, color and perspective itself.
All of these images were taken in natural light, on film, and without the use of colored filters. None of them has been photo shopped or digitally enhanced. All of these prints are archival ilfachrome prints, a process that is rapidly disappearing from our digital world.
