Sacred Sites: 19th-Century Photographs of Jerusalem
April 2–August 2, 2009
This small selection of photographs depicts sites in and around Jerusalem — including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Dome of the Rock — that are held sacred in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Drawn from a recent acquisition of 19th-century material, the objects on view will include an early salt print by Auguste Salzmann, albumen prints by Robertson and Beato and Louis De Clercq, and a magnificent mammoth plate print by Francis Frith.
Coordinated by Michelle Lamunière, John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Assistant Curator of Photography, Harvard Art Museum/Fogg Museum.
